Zoo Lock Down

Synopsis

In the spring of 2020, the Salzburg Zoo is confined due to Covid and closed to the public for the very first time in its history. Usually, animals are like actors on stage, but they don’t play roles. The closure of the zoo provides a unique opportunity to take an intimate and sometimes surreal look at the inhabitants of the zoo.

Reviews

« Usually these animals are like actors on stage. But they’re not playing, that’s the thing – they’re just themselves. When there is no us watching, something new happens. When nothing is happening, something has to be created – that’s where sound comes in. Sound allows us to get into those little stories that are being played out in the zoo. We come back to the same animals over and over again. I looked at this caiman, and it remained there, in the same position, for hours. We wonder if they miss all these people or if they are relieved. » Andreas Horvath, interviewed by Marta Balega, Cineuropa, 2022
