In Tsarist Russia, a doctor from a provincial town meets a former student who has been interned in Psychiatric Ward No. 6 for his political views. Fascinated by the student’s rebellious spirit, the doctor spends more and more time with him, challenging his own worldview. This adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s short story explores the boundaries between sanity and madness, as well as the critique of oppressive systems.

“Lucian Pintilie is the best Romanian director, but he hasn’t been able to film in his own country for many years, and he made this film in Yugoslavia. The film stands out for its powerful and sober depiction of this “house of the dead” where convicts languish on reprieve, gradually destroyed by violence and madness.”
