Tomas Ericsson is a disillusioned pastor in a small seaside village. One day, a married couple comes to see him – the husband is anguished by the menace of the atomic bomb. Having lost faith himself after the loss of his wife, Tomas can’t find words to console the man and confides in him his own doubts.

“A quarter of a century later, I see Winter Light with satisfaction: nothing has corroded or broken.” Images, Ingmar Bergman.

“I was clever enough to foresee that the film would not appeal to the general public. One could regret this, but the film was necessary.” Images, Ingmar Bergman.

“The Mass service remains a last hope, when everything else has failed: a lie, a drunkenness, a comfort, a tangible proof not of the existence of God, but that of Man.” Ingmar Bergman, le magicien du Nord, N.T.Binh.
